What is a microwave sensor?

A microwave sensor typically refers to a 5.8GHz radar motion sensor used for lighting and energy-saving applications. It detects movement by analyzing changes in reflected microwave signals.

Compared with PIR sensors, it offers better penetration capability and is less affected by temperature changes. As it mainly detects motion without detailed information such as distance, angle, or position, proper product selection and installation are important to match different application scenarios.

What is an mmWave sensor?

An mmWave sensor is a radar sensor that typically operates at 24GHz or 60GHz using FMCW radar technology. Compared with traditional microwave sensors, it can provide more detailed sensing information, such as distance and position, enabling more advanced applications.

With higher sensitivity and precise signal processing, mmWave radar can detect very small movements, including subtle body movements caused by breathing, making it suitable for applications such as presence detection, people counting, and fall detection.

Can 5.8GHz microwave sensors trigger through walls?

Yes. 5.8GHz microwave sensors can sometimes trigger through walls because they can penetrate certain non-metallic materials and do not provide precise distance and angle information to define clear boundaries.

It comes down to choosing the right sensor for the application. 5.8GHz remains EasyDetek's largest-volume product line and is an excellent choice for many motion detection applications.

When more precise boundary control is needed, selected 24GHz mmWave solutions can provide distance, angle, and speed information, with zoning and self-learning algorithms to help reduce unwanted triggers from adjacent areas.

Beyond that, 24GHz can detect tiny movements such as breathing, enabling true presence detection and making it a strong complement to PIR.

What is the difference between radar sensors and PIR sensors?

PIR sensors detect changes in infrared heat patterns, so they usually need body movement. Radar sensors emit low-power radio waves and analyze reflections, so they can support movement detection and, in suitable designs, micro-motion or presence detection.

In simple terms, PIR is often used to detect whether someone moved. Radar can be used to judge whether someone is present, depending on the frequency, algorithm, installation, and product design.

Are radar sensors safe for indoor use?

Yes. Indoor radar sensors use very low transmission power and are designed for daily indoor sensing applications. The transmission power of radar sensors is typically only about 1/50 of that of common devices such as smartphones and Wi-Fi routers.

Radar sensors are also non-camera sensors. They do not capture images or video, making them suitable for privacy-sensitive spaces such as hotel rooms, bathrooms, offices, homes, and eldercare environments.

What are the differences between 5.8GHz, 24GHz, and 60GHz radar?

5.8GHz radar is commonly used for basic motion sensing and lighting control. 24GHz radar is commonly used for indoor presence sensing, micro-motion detection, and PIR replacement. 60GHz radar is used for more advanced human sensing, such as people counting, trajectory, fall detection, and vital-sign related sensing.

The best frequency is not always the highest frequency. It depends on the application, penetration requirement, detection range, installation environment, and system integration.

Can 24GHz radar detect a person sitting still?

Yes, in suitable indoor applications, 24GHz radar can detect micro-motion caused by small body movement and breathing-level activity.

This is why 24GHz presence sensing is often used in meeting rooms, offices, hotel rooms, bathrooms, and smart homes where people may remain still for a period of time.

What materials can radar penetrate?

Radar can penetrate some non-metallic materials such as glass, wood, gypsum board, plastic, and acrylic, depending on material thickness and frequency.

Radar cannot penetrate metal. Metal surfaces strongly reflect radar signals and may create unwanted reflections. Concrete or reinforced concrete usually blocks radar signals, so these materials should not be treated as reliable penetration scenarios.

For real projects, do not select only by material name. Wall thickness, mounting position, and nearby metal structures should also be checked.

How should I choose the right radar sensor?

Start with four points: application scenario, required sensing function, output or communication protocol, and installation conditions.

For example, simple walk-by lighting control, stationary presence detection, hotel room control, high-bay lighting, and fall detection are different applications. What is the difference between motion detection and presence detection?

Motion detection is mainly used to detect walking or larger body movement. Presence detection is used when a person may sit, work, read, rest, or stay almost still.

If the application only needs "people come, lights on; people leave, lights off", a motion sensor may be enough. If false-off complaints matter, especially in offices, hotel rooms, bathrooms, or smart homes, presence detection is usually the better direction.

Which sensor should I choose for simple lights-on/lights-off control?

For basic energy-saving lighting control, a 5.8GHz motion sensor or a simple ON/OFF radar sensor is often enough.

If the space includes people sitting still, longer occupancy time, or complaints about lights turning off too early, consider a 24GHz presence sensor instead of only a basic motion sensor.

Which product type is suitable for stationary presence detection?

24GHz presence sensors are commonly used for stationary presence detection in indoor spaces such as offices, meeting rooms, hotel rooms, bathrooms, and smart homes.

For advanced applications such as people counting, trajectory tracking, fall detection, or vital-sign related sensing, 60GHz radar products should be evaluated according to the target environment.

Can one radar sensor model fit every application?

No. Radar performance depends on the sensing target, room layout, mounting height, materials, surrounding interference sources, protocol requirements, and control logic.

A model that works well in a corridor may not be the best fit for a hotel bathroom, high-bay warehouse, smart toilet, or fall detection room. Correct model selection is the first step in reducing testing risk.

Can radar sensors cause false triggers?

Yes. False triggers can happen because radar follows physical reflection principles. This is not always a product defect.

Common causes include metal reflections, wall or glass penetration, moving curtains or plants, fans, AC vents, vibration, nearby Wi-Fi routers, unsuitable sensitivity settings, or incorrect mounting direction.

How can false triggers be reduced?

False-trigger risk can be reduced through correct frequency selection, product selection, parameter tuning, and installation position.

In practical projects, EasyDetek usually checks the application scenario, detection target, wall materials, nearby metal, Wi-Fi router distance, moving objects, and mounting height before recommending a model.

Will multiple radar sensors interfere with each other?

In normal installations, this risk can be managed with proper spacing, product selection, and parameter settings.

For multi-sensor lighting projects, it is better to provide the layout drawing or installation distance before sampling. EasyDetek can help evaluate spacing and linkage logic.

What should installers pay attention to?

Installers should avoid aiming the sensor at AC vents, fans, swinging curtains, plants, aquariums, large metal surfaces, vibration sources, and high-power wireless devices.

For 5.8GHz radar products, keeping enough distance from Wi-Fi access points is especially important. A distance of at least 2 meters is usually recommended as a practical starting point.

Can detection range and delay time be adjusted?

Yes. Depending on the product, parameters can be adjusted by DIP switch, rotary dial, remote control, Bluetooth app or mini program, Tuya app, DALI master, KNX ETS, or other configuration methods.

Common adjustable settings include detection range, sensitivity, delay time, daylight threshold, and sometimes zoning or shielded areas.

Can radar sensors be added to an already renovated space?

Yes, but the best solution depends on wiring and installation conditions.

Options may include battery-powered sensors, surface-mount sensors, magnetic-mount sensors, or flush-mount sensors if an existing cutout is available. For retrofit projects, site photos are very helpful before model selection.

What output types and protocols can EasyDetek support?

The required output should be confirmed before sampling because it directly affects model selection.

What does dry contact output mean?

Dry contact is a passive switch contact. It can be used as a simple and universal signal for many control systems.

Depending on the model and configuration, it may support normally open, normally closed, or pulse output logic. Customers often use dry contact to connect radar sensing to lighting control, BMS, RCU, or other control equipment.

Can EasyDetek support KNX or DALI-2 systems?

Yes. EasyDetek has radar sensor products for KNX and DALI-2 application scenarios.

For KNX projects, configuration is usually done through ETS and product database files. For DALI-2 projects, parameters can be managed through the DALI system or supported tools depending on the product.

Can radar sensors work with Tuya, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, BLE, or smart home platforms?

How are radar sensors used in hotels?

In hotels, radar sensors can support cardless occupancy-based room control, bathroom presence detection, corridor detection, lighting control, and energy-saving linkage with room systems.

The sensor should usually work together with door status, RCU logic, delay settings, and room validation, rather than being treated as an isolated component.

How can radar sensors help office energy saving?

In offices and meeting rooms, radar presence sensing can provide occupancy input for lighting, HVAC, BMS, and room control systems.

Compared with simple motion-only sensing, presence sensing can reduce false-off when people are seated or working with small movements, while still helping shut down equipment after the space is empty.

Which products are suitable for long corridors?

For long corridors, EasyDetek recommends the EDQ25L series. It is designed for corridor detection and can cover up to 4 x 40 meters.

Before sampling, please provide corridor length, width, mounting height, wall material, and whether side rooms or adjacent areas may cause unwanted triggers.

Are radar sensors suitable for bathrooms or restrooms?

Yes, indoor bathrooms and restrooms are common radar applications, especially where people may remain still and traditional motion sensors may turn lights or fans off too early.

What information should I provide before sampling?

Please provide the application scenario, mounting height, detection purpose, detection area size, required output or protocol, input voltage, target market, project stage, expected quantity, and any site risks such as metal surfaces, Wi-Fi routers, AC vents, fans, curtains, or glass partitions.

Providing this information before sampling helps EasyDetek recommend a more suitable model and reduce unnecessary back-and-forth during testing.

Can EasyDetek recommend a model based on my site?

Yes. EasyDetek can recommend a model direction after reviewing the scenario, installation photos or drawings, required function, protocol, power supply, and expected control logic.

For difficult sites, short videos or photos of the installation area are often more useful than only a written description.

Do you accept OEM or ODM customization?

What if the sample test result is unstable?

Unstable sample results do not always mean the product is wrong. The cause may be installation position, sensitivity, delay settings, detection range, nearby metal, airflow, wireless interference, power supply, or mismatch between the model and scenario.
